On the weekend of April 24-26, the women's artistic gymnastics Provincial Championship 2009 was held in Windsor, Ontario. The best 24 athletes in each category, who had made through the four tough qualifying rounds came in Windsor to see who will be the best.

Tristar Gymnastics Club had 4 athletes who qualified to compete at this event.  Our 5th athlete, Alessia Salvaggio, had to miss the event due to injury.

Sydnee Foster competed in Level 5, ages 12/13. This is Sydnee's second year in competitive gymnastics and first year at the Provincial level. Sydnee has worked very hard all year and qualified for her first provincial championships. She displayed great level and confidence, demonstrating great gymnastics and no fear. She placed 23rd on Vault, 4th on Bars, 2nd on Beam and 12th on Floor for an impressive 3rd place finish overall.

Sarah Yoshida competed in Level 6, ages 12/13 . Last year wasn't very successful for Sarah as she placed 26th at last provincial championships. This year she worked hard and wanted to prove herself that she can do better .  The beginning of the season was rough for Sarah while she fractured her foot and spent a month in the cast, however her recovery was quick and made through all the qualifying rounds to provincial championships. Sarah had four very solid performances  and placed 4th on Vault, 1st on Bars, 11th on Beam and 12th on Floor for an amazing 5th place finish overall.

Sohani Ariyaratne also competed in Level 6, ages 12/13. sohani was 7th at the last year provincials in level 5. This year she decided to face a new challenges and go to the higher level. Sohani has great work ethics and determination. She started this season in the middle of the field, but she was improving every day and she won the final qualifying round at the Ontario cup in Orangeville. Now the pressure was on. Sohani and everybody new that she can do well at the provincials, but there competition started from scratch. Sohani handled the pressure very well as she was calm and focused. She had a great performance  and placed 4th on Vault, 1st on Bars, 1st on Beam and 12th on Floor for a 1st place finish overall and the Provincial Championship for her category!

Christina Lee is another interesting story. She won all around title last year in level 5. and this year was her last year of high school. She told me " iuly, I'd like to move to the higher level and face new challenges , because there's nothing more for me to accomplish in level 5 and even if i won't do well at level 6 i will be perfectly happy to try new skills and take my gymnastics to a different level."  The beginning of this season at Level 6 was very rough for Christina. We began to learn all new skills and she fell of bars in October and dislocated her elbow, she was in the cast for a few weeks and then spent another couple moths recovering, but she was very determent to get ready and learn all the required skills for level 6. She was even more determent to learn a very impressive bar routine including the skill she fell on. Finally she got it and made it through all the qualifiers and Ontario cup. For the last few competitions she was performing a new bar routine and no one could even come close to her on this event. In Windsor Christina competed in Level 6, age 14+ . She had very good meet and placed 15th on Vault, she once again had performed a super bar routine and placed  1st on Bars with the sky high score 12.1. Christina was the only athlete in Ontario in her category who scored above 12 points on bars, 7th on Beam , 20th on Floor for a fantastic 6th place finish overall.

This past weekend Alessia Salvaggio competed at Elite Ontario in Hamilton. She started competition on her favorite event vault and she was very first athlete. She performed an amazing vault and scored 14.15. No one scored higher. Alessia won gold medal on vault and receive a special award  for THE MOST POWERFUL VAULT. She had an  unfortunate fall during her new and very impressive bar routine and placed 14th on bars with the score 12.000 which through her from the all around competition. But she came back after bars and performed a very strong beam routine. She performed a very clean and solid routine and scored 13.700. She placed 5th on beam.

On the floor, Alessia was only one athlete in her age category who performed a double somersault. She again performed a very impressive floor routine and was awarded 13.900 and placed 4th on this event. Alessia also received another special award on the floor for THE MOST VARIETY IN TUMBLING.

Sohani

 Iuly, Christina and Jenna

This past weekend two Tristar athletes, Sohani Ariyaratne and Christina Lee competed at the Ontario Provincial Championships.

Sohani competed in the level 5, age 11 years old group against 55 best gymnasts from all over Ontario.  For Sohani,  it was her very first season in level 5. She started to do competitive gymnastics only a couple of years ago as a level 2 athlete. Last year she moved two levels up and this year she competed level 5. To qualify for the Provincial Championship was a great achievement for Sohani.  Sohani placed 15th on beam due to a small mistake in her acro move, but overall her routine was great. She then placed 4th on the floor,  1st on vault and  finished the meet with posting a personal best on the uneven bars of 11.9 and ranked 4th on bars. Sohani finished 5th overall on her first Provincial Championship and received  a special award on vault for the most powerful vault.

16 Year old, Christina Lee, was Tristars second competitor. She was competing in level 5,  14+ age category. She moved to Tristar three years ago from another club. She was in their interclub program but wanted to become provincial level athlete. She is a very quiet and very hard working girl. In her first year she qualified for the provincial championships and placed  8th on bars. She was very happy with that result. She kept on working very hard. In her second provincial championships last year she won silver medal on bars and was 11 all around. She was thrilled with that achievement as well. Her determination just kept on going learning new skills and improving her routines.

Christina didn't have the best draw. She started the competition as the very first athlete  on her very best event, bars.  We new that by going first, it would be very hard to score high on bars as the judges are always judging the first athlete very closely. She performed a beautiful bar routine and scored 11.8. Christina placed 5th on bars. Then she performed a very solid beam routine and was given a 11.65 and ranked 4th on beam. Her floor routine earned her an 11.45 and she placed 7th on that event. Then she did the best vault of her entire career. She was awarded an 11.7 and placed 3rd on vault.   Those four solid routines allowed Christina to  WIN THE ALL AROUND TITLE.

Christina became the 2008 Ontario Provincial Champion. She proved to everyone that if you have a dream and you work very hard, you can accomplish anything.

Well Done
